For each exchange, we added general information that has been retrieved from their website and various crypto news outlets. Information about the trade volume, number of coins and number of trading pairs were compiled from CoinGecko.com on the 21st of January 2020.

Binance, established in 2017, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from China and is now located in Malta. It is one of the biggest and most popular exchanges in the industry and usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ480,000 from 363 coins and 1,450 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on Binance is BTC/USDT. Binance allows fiat transactions in over 20 currencies including EUR, GBP and USD.

Despite a hacking incident in May 2019 in which around 7000 BTC were stolen, Binance can be considered a safe option. In 2019, Binance launched Binance DEX which is a decentralized digital asset exchange and Binance.us for US traders with more than 20 coins.

Bitflyer, established in 2014, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from Japan. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ3,900 from 5 coins and 8 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on Bitflyer is BTC/JPY. Bitflyer allows fiat transactions in JPY.

The exchange is regulated by both the Japanese Financial Services Agency (JFSA) and the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). These regulations make Bitflyer one of the most trusted cryptocurrency exchanges and allow them to operate within the United States.

Bitpanda is a leading retail exchange in Europe for cryptocurrency transactions involving buying and selling. It also includes a full wallet integration.

Bittrex, established in 2013, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from the United States. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ2,000 from 510 coins and 1,102 market pairs. The most active trading pair on Bittrex is BTC/USD. Bittrex allows fiat transactions in USD.

In 2019, Bittrex’s request for a virtual currency license was denied by New York financial regulators. US customers have fewer coins and tokens available to trade with.

Coincheck, established in 2012, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from Japan. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ2,500 from 15 coins and 15 market pairs. The most active trading pair on Coincheck is BTC/JPY. Coincheck allows fiat transactions in JPY.

Coincheck offers the world’s first Lisk staking service which is also the first staking service in Japan. It was hacked in 2017 and around 500 million NEM tokens were stolen. Monex Group acquired it in 2018 and has improved its security significantly since then. It’s a member of several cryptocurrency and blockchain associations. Coincheck is licensed and registered with the Kanto Financial Bureau under the Japanese Payment Service Act.

Crypto.com, established in 2016, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange based in Singapore It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ18,500 from 219 coins and 380 market pairs. The most active trading pair on Crypto.com is BTC/USDT. Crypto.com allows fiat transactions in AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP, USD, and BRL.

Crypto.com has its own coin, called Cronos (CRO), which has multiple uses. This includes the Crypto.com Visa Credit Card.

Huobi Global, established in 2013 in China, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange. It is part of the Huobi Group which has trading offices and operational centers in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea. Huobi Global is currently headquartered in Singapore and the biggest and most popular one. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ46,000 from 535 coins and 971 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on Huobi Global is BTC/USDT and it does not support fiat transactions.

In December 2019, their former US branch HBUS ceased operations after consistently low trading volume. Huobi plans on opening fiat gateways in Argentina and Turkey.

Kraken, established in 2011, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from the United States. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ25,000 from 162 coins and 546 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on Kraken is BTC/USD. Kraken supports fiat transactions in CAD, EUR, JPY, and USD. Additionally, it is one of the oldest and largest bitcoin exchanges in the world and has several other offices outside the US.

Kraken is registered with FinCEN in the US as a Money Services Business (MSB). In April 2014, Kraken became one of the first bitcoin exchanges to be listed on the Bloomberg Terminal.

KuCoin, founded in 2017, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange located in Singapore. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ57,000 from 684 coins and 1,227 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on KuCoin is BTC/USDT. KuCoin does not support fiat transactions but offers services such as spot trading, margin trading, staking and many more.

KuCoin has its own coin, called Kucoin Shares (KCS), which decreases the trading fees of its holders. In 2018, Kucoin raised around $20 million in a Series A funding backed by IDG Capital, Matrix Partners and Neo Global Capital and organized partnerships to bring cryptocurrencies to the masses.

OKX, established in 2013, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from China and belongs to OKcoin. OKX has two branches: OKX and OKX Korea. Upbit was established in 2017 and is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange from South Korea. It has three branches: Upbit Global, Upbit Indonesia and Upbit Korea. Upbit Korea is the largest branch and usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ63,000 from 169 coins and 291 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on Upbit is BTC/KRW. It supports fiat transactions into KRW.

It was founded by Song Chi-Hyung, one of South Korea’s richest men and Chairman of Dunamu. The exchange is South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume and is partnered with the US-based exchange Bittrex. South Korea’s Internet and Security Agency (KISA) awarded Upbit an information security management system (ISMS) license, for its strong infrastructure.

Zonda (Formerly BitBay), established in 2014, is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange located in Estonia. It usually has a 24-hour trading volume of around Ƀ150 from 54 coins and 195 trading pairs. The most active trading pair on Zonda is BTC/PLN. Zonda allows fiat transactions in EUR, PLN and USD.

Pinewood Estonia OÜ, the operator of Zonda, has obtained two licenses legitimizing it to operate the cryptocurrency exchange in Estonia.
